For day one, I decided to start off easy and go to one of my favorite fast food places. In and out is known for its amazing burgers and super secret sauce…or so I’ve been told. Being picky and vegetarian, I’ve never tried either of the two. However; today was the day I would finally go out and put that secret sauce I’ve heard so much about to good use. I typically order the most boring thing in the world; a vanilla milkshake and plain fries. However today I asked for animal fries and a neapolitan milkshake. Neither of these items ever sounded appealing to me for multiple reasons. 1) I hate union with a passion and one of the main components of the animal style fries is the unions. 2) I hate processed cheese. Another huge part of the fries. 3) I hate chocolate ice cream. It sounds crazy but something about it is just too chocolatey.
Here is a breakdown of the criteria I will be judging the food on:
Flavor
How full it makes me
Texture
Would I order it again?
An overall rating out of 10
With my friends by my side, I stepped up to the counter and ordered. This made me very nervous because I was afraid of being judged for ordering something so “nasty” in my opinion and because If I didn’t like the items, I’d go to bed hungry.

I was disgusted by the only half melted slab of cheese and the millions of little pieces of unions I could see swimming in the secret sauce. However I toughed it out and got my first bite down. My initial reaction was one of surprise and slight happiness. To my disbelief, the unions actually tasted really good in the way that they were prepared and with the secret sauce. However, the more I ate of it, the more it just tasted like I had dipped my french fries in salad dressing and the dish was quite messy. Next was the milkshake, which I was a little less nervous about because I love a lot of sugar, so how bad could it really be? This turned out to be something I really, really liked. Maybe a little too much. The chocolate was at just the right amount to where it tasted really good with the vanilla and strawberry; almost like a chocolate covered strawberries. Needless to say, I finished this drink very quickly
Results: Overall I was not too disappointed in this dish. The overall experience definitely outweigh my initial fears and problems with the dish.
Animal Fries:
Flavor 5/10. There wasn’t enough differing flavors for it to convince me to order it again. It was overall pretty boring but I give it bonus points for actually making like onions for once.
This dish as a whole, even with the shake, sadly did not satisfy my food craving and I found myself just wanting to order more fries. 2/10
Texture: 8/10. I liked the feeling of actually having some sort of substance to my fries rather than just the fries themselves. However; the cheese on top was hardly melted and made the dish a little more sad.
Would I order it again? Likely not. Sadly the cheese ruined it for me and the secret sauce was just too overpowering. Next time, I’ll just stick to regular fries.
Overall Rating: 6/10 I like that this dish got me to like onions, at least the way these ones were cooked, but it didn’t leave an overall good enough impression to make me want to order it again.
Neopolitan Shake:
Flavor: 10/10 It had just the right combo of all three flavors that each sip tasted just slightly different in a great way
Texture 10/10. I mean it’s a milkshake so duh.
Would I order it again? 100% YES. I loved this shake and I think I’m going to get this every time instead of the plain vanilla shake
